Red Cross ERVs from the Upstate are deployed to Houston area for Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts
GREENVILLE, S.C., Sept. 1, 2017 — The Michelin Corporate Foundation has donated $100,000 to the Upstate Chapter of American Red Cross to purchase a new Emergency Response Vehicle. The new vehicle will expand the fleet of three ERVs that the Upstate Red Cross deploys to disaster zones across the region, such as the Houston area, where three Upstate Red Cross ERVs are currently mobilized in support of recovery efforts for Hurricane Harvey.
“The Michelin Corporate Foundation is honored to support the American Red Cross in its mission to provide relief to residents from disasters like Hurricane Harvey,” said Philippe Legrez, executive director of the Michelin Corporate Foundation. “Every time this vehicle is deployed in an emergency, it will demonstrate Michelin’s purpose to give people everywhere a better way forward, especially in times of crisis or dire need.”
“The Upstate Red Cross desperately needs this new-generation ERV, which will serve as one of the most important tools Red Cross uses to mobilize responses to disasters,” said Lisa Colby, executive director for the Upstate Chapter of American Red Cross. “A new ERV will ensure that Red Cross’s response to future disasters remains swift and efficient.”
In 2016, a 20-year-old ERV in the Upstate Red Cross fleet was damaged in a disaster relief operation and could not be repaired. Red Cross ERVs represent the backbone of the Red Cross disaster relief system, serving as essential tools for delivering meals, relief supplies and case management services in the immediate aftermath of a disaster to bring survivors hope that recovery is possible. The new-generation design for the Red Cross ERV reduce the carbon footprint of the disaster response fleet — they are less expensive, more fuel efficient, reduce maintenance costs and last longer, even with rugged use.
