MICHELIN HIRES EIGHT YOUTH APPRENTICES FOR FULL-TIME POSITIONS IN ANDERSON COUNTY

55

GREENVILLE, S.C., June 26, 2020 — Michelin, in partnership with Anderson County Schools, recognized its 2019-2020 class of Michelin Youth Apprenticeship students at a collegiate-style “signing day” event. Among the class of 10 high school students, eight accepted full-time positions at Michelin’s rubber mixing facility in Starr, SC. One student was accepted to Michelin’s Tech Scholars program:

·       James King – Belton Honea Path High School

·       Braden Shirley – Belton Honea Path High School

·       Maleet Yobal – Belton Honea Path High School

·       Nick Bowman – Crescent High School

·       Dakota Davis – Crescent High School

·       Luke Lollis – Crescent High School

·       Dakota Norris – Crescent High School

·       Trevor Westbrook – Crescent High School

·       Tony Abernathy – TL Hanna High School

·       Ethan Holmes – Wren High School

“Michelin is honored to congratulate and celebrate the first class of manufacturing youth apprentices at our Starr manufacturing facility,” said Steve Miles, plant manager. “We look forward to working with the students who plan to continue their manufacturing careers at Michelin.”

The celebration reaffirms Michelin and Anderson County Schools’ shared mission of investing in education, training and career readiness to support and advance careers in manufacturing. This hands-on learning experience provides a minimum of 2,000 paid hours of on-the-job training with a Michelin mentor in a Michelin manufacturing facility, in addition to 240 hours of customized instruction at a career center.

In addition to the Youth Apprenticeship program, Michelin offers a Tech Scholar program that partners with local technical colleges to introduce high school seniors and graduates to opportunities available in advanced manufacturing. Michelin offers tech scholars a full scholarship, covering tuition, fees and books. Upon graduation, interested and qualified students join Michelin as reliability technicians, earning salaries comparable to graduates with four-year college degrees.

In 2019, Michelin’s Youth Apprenticeship program achieved national certification from the U.S. Department of Labor. Both programs are part of Michelin’s workforce development initiatives to advance opportunities for employment.

In the light of the George Floyd killing and systemic racism in America, you mean to tell me NOT one Apprentice could have been Black? Installing "BLM" on websites, billboards and commercials is nice. What will really matter is installing some deserving Black students on the full time Apprentice jobs. Im tired of being tired of the double standard
