Michelin and the International Center of the Upstate Launch First Upstate International Month

GREENVILLE, S.C. –  (Dec. 6, 2012) – Michelin North America has partnered with The International Center of the Upstate to inaugurate Upstate International, a monthlong series of community events that will take place in March 2013.

The internationally focused events – including concerts, dance performances, food tastings, art exhibitions, lectures and festivals – will be staged in multiple communities and venues throughout the region. The announcement was made today at Michelin’s headquarters during a ceremony that showcased the Upstate’s diverse mix of international cultures.

“Michelin was one of the first global corporations to plant roots in the Upstate nearly four decades ago, and today more than 230 international companies call the area home,” said Pete Selleck, chairman and president of Michelin North America. “As the presenting sponsor of Upstate International, Michelin is proud to recognize and support the thousands of international residents in the area, including our own employees, who contribute to the area’s unique cultural diversity and our state’s economy.”

Foreign business investment has been a significant driver of growth for the international community in the Upstate. According to the Carolina Center for Foreign Investment, South Carolina’s Upstate region captures the largest foreign investment per capita of any area in the United States.

Upstate International begins March 1, 2013, with an opening night gala to celebrate cultures from around the world. More than two dozen events will continue throughout the month, from foreign language lessons for children to concerts by marquee international musicians and performers such as the Whirling Dervishes.

“We are honored to join Michelin and our many community partners in this innovative endeavor that brings together public, private and nonprofit leaders to emphasize cross-cultural appreciation and understanding," said Whitney Walters, executive director of The International Center of the Upstate. “Thanks to the support of area chambers of commerce, city and county governments and universities and corporations, Upstate International is sure to shine an even brighter spotlight on our region's rich diversity and growing international community.”

Clemson University is also taking a leading role in the launch of Upstate International by hosting and sponsoring events throughout the monthlong celebration.

“The Upstate’s international community enhances South Carolina’s position in thought and cultural leadership,” said James Barker, president of Clemson University. “As our companies, universities and community organizations continue to attract and welcome thousands of international residents, the Upstate is strengthening its position as one of the country's most highly desirable locations to live, work and invest.”
