First-ever Michelin Guide Seoul Now on Sale

Premier South Korean edition of famed restaurant guide available nationwide

Greenville, S.C. April 4, 2017 – Travelers to the capital of South Korea can now prepare for the journey with Michelin Guide Seoul 2017. Michelin’s famed anonymous inspectors found 24 restaurants, in total, worthy of coveted Michelin stars.

“The richness of this first selection is the sign that today Seoul has emerged as a mecca of world gastronomy,” said Michael Ellis, International Director of the Michelin Guide.

Two restaurants earned the top honor of three stars. Gaon and La Yeon are both traditional Korean restaurants known for their elegance and delivery of traditional yet contemporary dishes. Three restaurants obtained two stars in this first selection in Seoul: Gotgan, an establishment that impresses both with the panoramic view it offers of the city, Kwon Sook Soo, where Chef Kwon Woo Joong infuses modern touches into traditional Korean food and Pierre Gagnaire a traditional French restaurant that reflects the creative style of the Parisian chef while incorporating local ingredients.

The MICHELIN Guide Seoul 2017 also gave nineteen restaurants one star: establishments that reflect the great diversity and richness of the gastronomy available in Seoul.  The first edition highlights restaurants that serve traditional Korean food such as Poom or Hamo, Twenty Four Seasons or Jungsik. Other cuisines feature in the Guide like the Italian Ristorente Eo, French L’Amitié and Votre Maison, and sushi specialty Kojima.

The full selection in the MICHELIN Guide Seoul 2017 is available on the website www.guide.michelin.co.kr. This selection includes:

  • 2 restaurants with three stars
  • 3 restaurants with two stars
  • 19 restaurants with one star

Available in Korean and English, the guide features 268 pages of recommendations on the best restaurants and hotels in Seoul and environs. In total, there are 34 hotels that earned a spot in the coveted guide.

The Michelin Guide Seoul 2017 is now available for purchase at booksellers nationwide for $19.99.

About the MICHELIN Guide

Thanks to the rigorous MICHELIN Guide selection process that is applied independently and consistently around 28 countries, the MICHELIN Guide has become an international benchmark in fine dining. The selections of all restaurants in the guide are made by Michelin's famously anonymous inspectors who dine in the areas regularly. These local inspectors are trained to scrupulously apply the same time-tested methods used by Michelin inspectors for many decades throughout the world. This ensures a uniform, international standard of excellence. As a further guarantee of complete objectivity, Michelin inspectors pay all their bills in full, and only the quality of the cuisine is evaluated. To fully assess the quality of a restaurant, the inspectors apply five criteria defined by Michelin: product quality, preparation and flavors, the chef's personality as revealed through his or her cuisine, value for money, and consistency over time and across the entire menu. These objective criteria are respected by all MICHELIN Guide inspectors, whether in Japan, the United States, China or Europe. They guarantee a consistent selection so that a star restaurant has the same value regardless of whether it is located in Paris, New York or Tokyo.

Michelin has been a pioneering force in advancing mobility through innovation and excellence in manufacturing quality.  The company patented the pneumatic, or air-filled, tire in the late 1800s.  This was a milestone moment in mobility, permitting automobile owners to travel at great length in a single journey.  Then, in an effort to prompt travelers to enjoy their newfound mobility, the company created guides and detailed maps to steer travelers on their way.  The most famous publication that developed from this is the internationally recognized MICHELIN Guide.
