CLERMONT-FERRAND (January 15, 2013) – Saab AB recently presented the next generation of its popular Gripen multi-role fighter aircraft the Gripen E and F with the Swedish and Swiss government already lining up to make purchases. Michelin Aircraft Tire announced today that it will be providing a MICHELIN® AIR radial tire fitment for the next generation Gripen E (single-seat), multi-role fighter aircraft.
“Michelin is proud to be the sole source tire on the Saab Gripen E,” said Jean-Marc Nenert, Military aircraft tire segment Manager Europe. “Michelin is committed to providing top quality products that offer unmatched safety. Our radial tires are designed to provide a long tire life and the exceptional performance that Saab demands.”
As innovation and radial leader, The MICHELIN AIR radial tire was designed specifically for the Gripen E and will replace bias tires in use on current models. This will be the first time Saab will use a radial tire on its Gripen fighter. The radial tire provides more landings per tread, improved cut resistance, better safety and cooling down twice as fast as bias-ply technology. It also offers a weight reduction over comparable bias tires, an extra strong carcass to restrict tire growth.
Michelin is a trusted partner for original equipment manufacturers and provides more original equipment military fitments than any other tire manufacturer.
The tires will be made at Michelin facilities in Bourges in France.
